The 2026 midterm elections are arguably one of the most anticipated voting seasons in recent history. In a Democratic stronghold like New York, primaries are crucial to determining the direction of the party. This year, progressive challenges to incumbent and establishment Democrats are happening all over the state, and Yonkers is no exception.
Today, June 23, 2026, New York joins Maryland, Utah, and South Carolina in holding primaries. Each contest is a signal to political parties to gauge public sentiment, and people are eager to be heard. This is their first opportunity.
After the shock of the 2024 presidential election came the chainsaw politics that followed: violating democratic norms, undermining rule of law, anti-immigration policy establishing ICE as the president's domestic army, global destabilization, and the dismantling of civil rights. Over the past 519 days, we've watched our biggest institutions buckle under legal pressure from the federal government.
But out of that darkness, some bright spots emerged. Millions of people rallied behind No Kings Day demonstrations, each growing bigger than the last. People rallied behind Jimmy Kimmel and Don Lemon. The organic emergences of fearless, community-based anti-ICE movements in Los Angeles, Chicago, D.C. and Minnesota. The boycott of Target continues in response to the company's voluntary abandonment of DEI. And the judicial branch has been holding the line, preventing much of Project 2025, with lower court justices upholding the rule of law.
People have had enough. This is the year of referendum. Will that referendum reach the halls of Westchester politics?
