On Saturday, July 26, Yonkers Arts hosted the first installation of Growing at Home: The Art and Sustainability of Microgreens and Mushrooms, organized by Mi Oh My Farms & Farma Cares.

The workshop introduced attendees to the process of growing microgreens, the nutrient-dense baby leaves of plants. At this stage in the growth cycle, microgreens contain more beneficial compounds than mature plants, making them an easy and versatile way to consume essential vitamins and minerals. They can be added to sandwiches, salads, smoothies, and more.

After the lesson, each participant was sent home with a mini grow kit, care instructions, and a set of seeds to try it on their own.

The next installment in the series takes place on Saturday August 9th and August 23rd from 1:30 - 3:30pm and will focus on growing oyster mushrooms, the popular meat alternative known for its chicken-like texture.

Farma Cares is a project by rap legend and Yonkers-native Styles P and is focused on solving food insecurity in Yonkers with plant-based solutions and community initiatives.
